Minifreak multi comp adding white noise
« on: April 10, 2023, 04:51:14 am »
I noticed on a few patches with short release times, there's sometimes a little "burst" of white noise, but they're not using a noise engine, and I couldn't filter out the noise.

"Clean n Tidy" is a good factory preset example.

I narrowed it down to the Multi Comp effect. When it's on, and using one of "OPP, high ctrl, or all up" subtypes, the white noise happens. I can even hear it when I turn OSC1 all the way down and hit a key rapidly/firmly -- there will be a little pop and burst of the white noise. The white noise volume increases if I raise the "Amount" parameter, and is delayed if I increase the "Time" parameter.

Is my machine faulty? Are other folks hearing this too?

This is normal.

What happens is that the high gain of the compressor lifts the level of the analogue VCF/VCA which has a little bit of noise. When the Time is long, and there is no masking signal (short release), you will hear the noise in the release phase of the compressor envelope detector.

It's even present in the MiniFreak V software.
