Can any of Arturia's Soft Synths make these sounds?
« on: February 10, 2021, 07:07:44 pm »
Hi gang

It says on the front page of this forum that you can ask questions like "How do i make this sound" and I do not like asking for help as I like to figure it out for my self but after a couple of months I am stuck so here goes.

I have been trying desperately to find or make any of the 3 sounds below in either the The V Collection or Analogue Lab.

In each of the 3 examples (from a 1987/88 pop recording) you will hear very specific FX noises,

1. Is a type of short repeating bubbling (white noise?) sound
https://soundcloud.com/roger-henders/bubbling-fx-1/s-TNu35CfNOSv

2. I do not really know who to describe it except maybe low-fi Sci-fi
https://soundcloud.com/roger-henders/bubbling-fx-2/s-cBQc8gZxROc

3. I seem to remember that this sound used to be known as Talking Computers
https://soundcloud.com/roger-henders/bubbling-fx-3/s-Jx6w7HCXMEw

Do any of our estemed members who know the synths in Analogue Lab or V collection inside out recall having heard any of these sounds or can maybe point me in the right direction?

I know the artist in the examples (the KLF) made judicious use of an Oberheim OB-8 as a main synth on lots of recordings so its possible but I also seem to remember coming across the FX sounds in example 1 & 3 on a hardware synth in a studio back in the 90s but which one I have no chance of remembering.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Hi,

Yes i think that you can create something like the first sound with a substractive synthesis by using noise as a sound source, a LFO to modulate the filter, and

then just adjust the resonance and the cutoff. I think you shall set a quite high resonance. Small changes can make a big difference.
Try it on different synths. They will not sound excactly the same, so one may come closer than another.
Perhaps even better result require a little more, but i think most people wont hear any difference in the heat. if there even will be a difference.

The third sound can be a sample if i understand your example correct. Also i think it might use something like a flanger, chorus or other effect with settings to  create the metallic element.
Perhaps try to use the vintage 80s samplers like the CMI or the Emulator. Can't tell if you can find a factory sample in there, that can be used. But you can also use own samples.

You have posted the first sound for the second, so you have only posted two sounds.

Hope this help you on the way.

Hi LBH

Thank you for taking the time to write up you reply and suggestion which I will try and experiment with tomorrow.

I apoligise for the links being messed up, I was trying to do too many things at once (home schooling kids who would rather be in the garden playing in the snow). Example 2 now plays the correct soundfile.

Regarding example 3 - I have discovered a preset called "Sample & Hold" which is a good starting point to try and modify as it sound sort of in the right ball park which is for the ARP 2600 but if anyone else reading this has any other suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks AGAIN.

Hi again Event2020,

The basis of the FX2 might be as simple as Square waves being Pitch modulated by a LFO that's also set to a Sqaure wave. And also there seems to be used Delay effects.
Are you sure this is'nt the sound where you say you have found a Sample&hold sound?

BTW: What's the music? And by who?

Hi LB

You might be right about the Sample & Hold but I will check it later when the kids have gone to bed - only time I get any peace.

The song is Doctorin' The Tardis by The Timelords (aka the KLF) and these sounds are from the 12" version.

Hi again,

I know about KLF/ Timelords. But i did'nt know about this track.

The track seems to be made using samples from old recordings and perhaps added some seperate instrument samples. I hear old songs in there like The Sweets "Blockbuster".

Perhaps Beltree samples in CMI Vs sample browser, was used in this song added Delay/ effects for one off the sounds you search.
So it look like, my suggestion about searching the CMI and Emulator sample libraries could be a good idea. It's possible they have used Factory samples.
Keep in mind, that samples and presets is'nt the same. The sample browser are in the advanced sections of the instruments.
Perhaps they have sampled a recording where a sample like this was used.

Just in case anyone is following this - here is an update.

I did as LBH suggested and checked out the CMI V's bell tree samples but none of them sound right to my ears although the CMI is the right time period (the sound I am trying to recreate would have come from a synth from the 80's.

I have drawn a blank so Using Spectralayers I was able to extract the spectrogram for the sound I need and (a good evenings work) here is image of it.

I am afraid it mens nothing to me as it looks quite complex but its an clear pattern so it may mean something to those who know about such things.

I also have a cleaner example sound file of what I extracted here (obviously it sounds filtered because it was cut out of the original sound using spectral editing but it does mean it can be heard without the drums getting in the way.

For the first, I would start with the Minimoog or a synth with white or pink noise, select noise then the filter with fairly high resonance; near self-oscillation. Set the LFO to Sample and Hold, a good deal of amount and adjust the rate to taste

For the seocn, any of the 80's synths sould do

The thired, The Vocoder looks like the place to start, or one of the 80's synths with extensive sound midfiers

I will try to figure it out for more. Keep sharing such informative post keep suggesting such post.
