Bug or Design
« on: December 15, 2018, 08:07:58 pm »
It seems that most of the patches I have played have the mod wheel inverted.

IE if the mod wheel is closed the filters are wide open. as the mod wheel is opened, the filter closes.

Apex Yellow is a good example.

Am I that old that the mod wheel has been reversed? :o

Thanks
Barry

That's because the filter modulations is set to negative values so the use of the modwheel decrease the filter values. So it's by design in each preset.
When modulations is set to positive values, then the modwheel increase modulation values.

Thanks for the insight. I was hoping that wasn't the answer, but alas.

It seems a little left handed, but I can swap things when I find patches I like.

It must be a generational thing  ???

Hi Barry,

that's a pretty typical behaviour, since if a closed MW  closes the filter completely you wouldn't hear a thing. So Mod-Wheel closed (cc#1 = 0) tends to be the default sound setting, what is especially good when using a Roland Keyboard, since the Mod Wheel is spring loaded and resets to Zero automagically.

What exactly do you want to archive? I could imagine that you refer to synths that save the default setting together with their presets.

Hi,

Just mentioning because when I started, in the 70s and up until the mid 90s, the mod wheel was almost always off (set to 0) and then we would open it as desired.

It has reversed over time I guess.

It is just backward to me.

Hi Barry,

don't know, I started bit later, with digital low budget synths like Casio CZ-1, TX81z and MT32, when they were new  ;)
