Can you input Midi and output CV and gate through a DAW with the Beatstep?

Hi,

I assume it was designed for this, but can't seem to get it to work:
I have a usb midi device connected to my keyboard and PC, and the USB of the breatsteap connected to my PC.
I have Sonar (my DAW) setup for input MIDI from the USB midi device and output (MIDI) to the beatstep.

I have the CV out and gate out connected to my gear, but when I play notes, nothing comes out of the CV and gate. 
How do I input MIDI and output CV and gate so that I can play my MIDI keyboard and control my Modular gear?
