The LOOK

Maybe it's because I'm recovering from surgery and my outlook is all skewed. 

But - I can't keep myself from feeling I'm looking at a Soviet era heating control panel for a cold apartment bloc (sic) when I'm designing sounds.  I wish I could get a different faceplate and someday I may remove it and give it a good artistic brightening up with some paints and textures from a craft shop.

I actually love the looks! I refer to it as the 60s/70s soviet nuclear reactor control room look

However, I do get that not everybody is that into the greys (which happens to be my favourite colours!). It would be interesting to see your refinsihed panel - it is doable!
