Be Kind: Copy and Paste in MMC?
« on: June 25, 2017, 10:14:26 pm »
Would dearly love to see copy and paste in the MMC for knobs, pads and project settings.

Same request, user story style. :)

#1 As a user configuring my controller I want to be able to copy and paste a configured control so that I can avoid setting the same things over and over.

#2 As a user configuring my controller I want to be able to copy and paste an entire section of pads or controls so that I can make preset variations and avoid setting the same things over and over.

Scenarios for the above, using the BeatSteps (or the minilabs or keylabs or...) as an example:

#1 When setting up CCs for knobs, it's often the case that each knob will have the same settings. If those settings differ from the default, it requires changing N items on each pad. With copy and paste, it would only require changing the CC. And since the CC can only be set via a select list, presuming the usual use case is incremental values for adjacent controls, it means the target CC is right next to the pasted value instead of scrolling... Could be extra kind and provide for that default use case: "Copy", "Paste" and "Paste +1" where +1 increments the CC on a knob and the note number on a pad. <bigheartsemojihereplease>

#2 I have my pads all set up to the notes that work for my drum application. The app has more than 16 controllable parameters. I want to set up 2-4 presets and have the pads mapped to the correct notes across all of them. For some scenarios, 'Save As' works fine here but I've run into scenarios where I already have pads set in one preset and controls in another and all I want to do is merge them. I'm a nerd so I went and did it in the text file but seems like it would be an awfully friendly feature to have within the app.

Bonus round: let's shoot for the moon here... :)

#3 As a user configuring my controller I want to be able set all of my controls to a sequential set of values in one step so that I can save time configuring my machine and get back to making music with it!

If "Paste +1" were to become a thing, that code would represent most of the core methods required for striping an entire bank of controls. Set the first control in a series and choose "Paste Multiple +1" where it would paste over and over until the end of the bank, incrementing the value by 1 each time... would be amazing! These sorts of "striping" methods have been around a long time in ProTools and the like and they're an amazing time saver. With so many great Arturia controllers consisting of banks of controls, this would be so very welcome.

Hi syrupcore,

In fact the option is available.
On any parameter drop down menu simply make a right click and select "Copy value to other pads"
 ;) Hope it helps !

Say what?! Nice! Alas... I can't get this to work on my Mac laptop. Tried all of the conventional methods I know of (two finger tap, ctrl+tap, alt+tap, cmd+tap...) but I don't get a context menu. I've only tried it with the pads/knobs on the the two beatsteps. Perhaps it's only available on other models or only on Windows?

on the #3 bonus round above... I just ran into a situation where a multi-timbral app expects CC71 for the filter. To adjust it across channels, the MIDI channel needs to change while the CC for each control needs to remain the same. So an alt 'striping' option might be "Stripe MIDI channels from [whatever the user set for the first control]" vs "Strip CC number from [whatever the user set for the first control]".

On a similar, "save the world a bunch of time" note, it would be grand to be able to select all of a similar type control and then adjust a setting to be the same across all controls. For instance, "I set the MIDI channel incorrectly" (or my target device's channel had to be changed) or "These are all set to Relative 2 but it turns out Absolute would be much better".

Not a huge deal to do it manually but it's precisely the sort of thing computers are supposed to do for us in this brilliant digital future!

To put these not needed but 'please be kind' requests a different way:

If it takes 10 minutes to create and tweak a 16 knob preset
and
Arturia has 50,000 MCC users
and
these striping/apply-to-all type features could cut that down to 5 minutes (in some phony average version of the world)
==
One enterprising Arturia developer could save the world almost 6 months of time per preset created! Probably in a single sprint!

No really:
Code: [Select]
5 min * 50000 users = 250,000 minutes saved
250,000 / 60 = 4166 hours
4166 / 24 = 173.6 days

Thanks, Ben. Yep. Tried every combo I could think of (incuding cmd, ctl, option, shift and various combinations of those) but not getting a context menu. I'm using version 1.7.0.217 on OSX 10.12.5.

Thanks again, Ben but still no.

Did you tried with a CMD+Right Click ?
Yes. Like I mentioned, I tried every key+track pad combo I could think of. There is no 'right click', per se, on a mac laptop but I have 'two finger tap' set up in the system preferences to trigger it. Works everywhere (else!). Control+Single Click (not cmd) is the OSX default for 'right click' and that doesn't work either (but also works everywhere else but MCC).

I've been testing with a mac book pro here and it's working. Simply make a 2 finger click on a parameter.
BTW you have the latest version of the MidiControlCenter ?

Thanks again, Ben. Well, that's good news that it works with a Mac track pad but it's still not working for me!

As far as I can tell, I'm using the latest publicly available MCC: Build 217, Revision 214a506 from Jun 23, 2017.

Computer info: MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015). MacOS Sierra: 10.12.5 (16F73)

As ever, it could of course be user error on my part but I'm fairly confident it's not (said every user ever, I know!). Not worth much but I've been using personal computers since they had a turbo button and lacked a hard drive. Developer by day. Total nerd about keyboard shortcuts (vim for life!) and trackpad shortcuts.

I've only tried to get copy/paste to work on the BeatStep and BeatStep Pro; is it perhaps only available for other models within MCC?

Strange !
I've been testing again with pads of the BeatStep.
Holding Option then clicking on pad parameter with 2 fingers.
and it works fine  ???

On any parameter drop down... Well, I completely missed this detail. :) I was right clicking on the visual controls themselves. Just found this thread and decided to give it another try. Sure enough, if I 'right click' on any of the parameter drop downs in the lower part of the screen, the option to 'Copy to all other X' appears. This is perhaps a little too bull in a china shop for some use cases but will still save a lot of time for others.

Thanks again for the help @Ben.
