Issue with arpeggiator within a DAW ...
« on: April 13, 2017, 04:33:46 pm »
Hi!

If I have the midi control center arpeggiator set to: send notes, when I play an arpeggio it will play through the arpeggio ONCE and then completely STOP. so, if I hold down 4 keys, it will play those four keys but then be done. The DAW will show those 4 different notes.

However, if I set it to "off", the arpeggiator continues playing, but it only sends one note to the DAW. Is there not a way to combine these so that I hear the arpeggio and it sends the notes to the daw for as long as it plays?!

That sounds a bit weird.

Are you in ARP mode or Matrix/Arp mode?

Also just to check that you don't have a midi loop going on?

Arp mode. How would I check if I have a midi loop?

A simple way to check is to remove the midi cable or USB cable does the arp work correctly then?

Then connect the USB or midi cable but without the daw running, does the arp work then?

Ah it does. The only issue is the arp, and only when he midi center is set to send notes. I'm not sure how I'm able to send notes and also hear the arp.

The way usee ableton with hardware synths without having to mess around with local on/off settings is to have two midi tracks, one is a record track and the other is a play track.

The first has midi input set to the synth and no midi output.

The second has midi output set to the synth and no midi input.

Record the matrixbrute to track 1. Then drag the midi clip to track 2 for playing it back to the matrixbrute.

If you try to do it with a single track and local is turned on in the synth you will get a midi loop so if you want to just work with a single track you need to turn local off on the synth. The only way to do that is via the midi control centre.

I think I understand, but right now I'm just trying to hear the arpeggiator, and the factor that is making the difference is not local control, but rather the "sequencer sends arp/notes" .. toggled OFF I hear the arpeggiator as it should be, and ON I do not.

Also, for what it might be worth, when I record from the Matrix Brute into Ableton, I have no issues EXCEPT for when I try to record an arpeggio ...

The problem is there when not using the arp it's just that you are not noticing it.

With the arp you notice it because the individual arp notes are looping back to the mb, once it gets a note off for each of the notes you are holding the arp stops. So you have the arp notes output from the mb looping back to the mb and playing the arp.

With the arp not sending notes you get the notes you played being sent to live and then looped back to the mb in the same way but the note off messages only get sent when you release the keys.

It's best to avoid midi loops but i could be wrong, I'll check on mine in the morning ...

Ok, it when do I do to be able to both hear the arp and have the notes recorded? Currently I have local control off

With local control off you need the input and output channels on a single track set to the MB and the track set to monitor or being recorded.

So when you play a key on the mb it gets sent to live, live then sends to note info back to the mb which then triggers the sound.
