'Brass' sounds will probably be CS-80(although he also used a Prophet 10), however if you mean the string sounds usually assocaited with the Bladerunner score ( and similar period pieces, like Antarctica), they were from the Roland's VP-330 (along with choirs sounds).

The earlier work China predates the introduction of the VP-330, and does
display many CS-80 string sounds.

The VP-330 is something I would like to see as a new plug-in (how about it Arturia?), as it really has a distinctive sound (due, in no short measure, to the version of the Dimension-D chorus circuit it sported).

Vangelis Horn sound from Blade Runner
« Reply #3 on: February 26, 2004, 12:31:50 am »
Here is a preset I made for a guy.
It emulates a synth horn sound that Vangelis used.
The real key to making it sound right is
1. a big spring reverb
2. a volume pedal to vary the attack time.
Hope you enjoy it.

God Bless,

Glen

Hello Glen,
Apparently you had problems to attach your presets file.
Here is how to do:

_ You have to post a reply with a message.
_ click on "Add an Attachment"
_ select your preset file .ays (which is an CS-80V file created with the EXPORT button of the CS-80V) ) with the browse button
_ add commentary on your file if needed
_ click on "Add Attachment" then Submit your message

Best regards
Xavier

Maybe Arturia could ask Vangelis to make some
presets for CS80V....

I should have mentioned that the flute preset from channel 1 is no.4 and the bass preset on channel 2 is no. 5

Also, when making these brass sounds with presets buttons 3 and 3 (ch1 & ch2), set ch1 on 16feet and ch2 on 8feet or vice versa for a more spaceous sounds.

best,
V

He used the Cs80's ability to change the speed of the SubOsc on many many sounds to get that breathy effect. The brass is no different but to realise the effect of sending the size of the sound to the massive portions (he normally eminates) requires a judgious use of reverb to give that hissing tale effect also. Also, he mixed in subtle amounts of white noise in to much of his sounds. If you listen closely there is a lot odf white noise in China where his ability to compose natural electronic sounds are it's best. On the CS80V, I have managed to produce the most beautiful flute sound using the Ring Mod at slow speed, Aftertouch moding the Filters, VCA mod, VCF mod, Sub-osc speed.

None of big vangs sounds were static each had a depth behind them that requires a degree of control of your fingers (and possibly feet). He liked the CS80 for it's ability to get in to and manipulate the sound whilst playing with every limb of his body.

I will have to get my efforts posted here.

Although I agree it would be nice to have a VP-330 VSTi, I take issue with the notion that most of the sounds in "Blade Runner" are VP-330. Perhaps if you mean most of the strings/pads, that is probably true, but ALL the distinctive leads were CS-80. When you think of the standout themes, like the opening theme or "Blade Runner blues", it is CS-80 you're hearing. I refer you to this excellent article by dedicated Blade Runner fantatics and researchers: http://media.bladezone.com/contents/film/production/soundtrack/vangelis/.

regards,
Armando.
