Request for graceful close without dongle.

I bought the Jupiter 8v without realizing it required a Syncrosoft dongle. While I don't boycott dongle-protected products automatically, I probably would have for something as optional as a soft-synth. This isn't to comment on the quality of the Jupiter 8v, which is excellent, but it's not worth the bother to cart around small, losable pieces of plastic for $200 software that I can fairly easily substitute with other soft-synths.

But what's done is done and I'll use the Jupiter 8v when I can. I even went ahead and ordered the Prophet which I hadn't yet bought because of the dongle.

But there's one big problem that angers me every time it happens. As you might guess from the first paragraph, I work primarily with non-dongle-protected software (Logic and Waves being the exceptions) and I don't normally carry dongles around on my person. I frequently forget to bring them when traveling or even when I've just moved my mobile rig to a different room in the house.

Being in the habit of having most of my stuff just work, I try to load Jupiter 8v and, of course, I get an error dialog that states:

Syncrosoft License Control - Error
Application 'Jupiter-8v 1.0' has caused the following error: No protection device connected.

Hitting retry does me no good if I don't have the dongle with me, so I hit cancel.

That by itself is just irritating, but what happens next is infuriating as it has caused me to lose work on several occasions.

Rather than gracefully dropping me back into whatever host I was using sans the Jupiter 8v, it gives me another dialog box which states:

Syncrosoft License Control - Error
Attention: If you cancel this operation the application might crash.

Well there's no "might" about it. It crashes whatever host program I happen to be running. This happens on both my dual G5 tower and my Core 2 duo laptop, and happens no matter what host might be running (Live, Digital Performer, Logic are my primaries).

I don't know if this is a problem with your code or with Syncrosoft's and quite frankly I don't care. It's your software that I'm using when it happens and it's your name that I'm cursing as I try to recreate however much work I've lost. It's also your name that I'm remembering the next time I'm shopping as the plug-ins that not only use a dongle but crash my applications.

I realize it's pointless to belabor the dongle issue, but if you're going to saddle your paying customers with yet another intrusive scheme, at least try to either have your software not crash my machine or choose a company that can write better software than Syncrosoft. I hope this gets fixed soon in an update.

This post still has me laughing. I couldn't agree more. What kind of copy protection software is so poorly written that the authors KNOW it will crash applications and then advertise their incompetence with a warning? And you're right - there's never a case of "might" crash, it's always a case of "definitely will" crash. I have other syncrosoft protected software and the situation is the same, so this isn't an arturia problem.  

I'm no big fan of iLok or any copy protection scheme, but at least none of the other ones reliably crash my host applications. Syncrosoft really needs to improve this situation. The iLok doesn't crash hosts just because it isn't connected, so there's really no excuse for the syncrosoft software to do this.

Uhm, you knew Arturia did switch to dongle protecton on their last product (ProphetV) and still were surprised that the JupiterV was protected that way too?

Next thing is that i am surprised how many people complain about a little dongle. There were times when you had to transport your gear in a car to have a jam session anywhere else. Now you only have to grab a little dongle. I mean, do you guys go to your gigs and forget your hardware home too?

I think you're missing the point. Neither the original post nor my post was a slam on the dongle. The problem is that the syncrosoft software will crash your application if the dongle isn't connected. This simply shouldn't happen. If I want to open a project that uses the prophet or jp8 plug-in and the dongle isn't present, the application should be able to open and those plug ins should be unavailable for use - as if they were bypassed. Instead, the syncrosoft software prevents me from even launching the application. I mean, not only will the project itself not open, the lack of a dongle will crash the host app before it opens. This is what we're complaining about. But, like I said, this isn't an arturia problem, it's a syncrosoft problem.

Update 1.1 doesn't solve the problem. All applications crash when the dongle isn't connected. :x

It should be simple to make: not loading the plugin when their is no dongle connected.

With the macbook, it is very irritable to have the few slots filled with the dongle when you don't evem use the Jupiter.

(And yes, I have a legal version and Dongle).

Me too! I travel abroad a fair bit and don't want to risk loosing my dongle, therefor leaving it back in the studio. This makes it impossible for me to even open my projects when I'm not in the studio. This is unacceptable.
I love the actual product but wouldn't recommend it to fellow musicians because of this one, major glitch.

Please see to it that this is fixed.

Syncrosoft License Control - Error

I don't know if this is a problem with your code or with Syncrosoft's and quite frankly I don't care. It's your software that I'm using when it happens and it's your name that I'm cursing as I try to recreate however much work I've lost. It's also your name that I'm remembering the next time I'm shopping as the plug-ins that not only use a dongle but crash my applications.

I realize it's pointless to belabor the dongle issue, but if you're going to saddle your paying customers with yet another intrusive scheme, at least try to either have your software not crash my machine or choose a company that can write better software than Syncrosoft. I hope this gets fixed soon in an update.

I collaborate with another musician on a lot of tunes and we often have different plug-ins.  At the moment it is a monumental pain to have to deliberately remove any Syncrosoft registered plug-ins every time I send a work-in-progress to him.

I don't mind rendering the individual output of those synths and then muting them for the instruments he doesn't own, but it's crazy that the current protection cannot exit gracefully when a plug-in or license is not found.

It's the one thing that genuinely frightens me about using the Arturia synths in a live situation - one thing missing and my whole live rig goes down.
