Audible clicks when a key is toggled on/off at low volume
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:46:59 am »
I was having this issue with my Microbrute, and I want to make sure it's really a problem before returning it.  When I am using the keyboard, I can hear an audible click through the output when I first press a key, and another click when I release it.  The problem is more noticeable when the oscillator's waveforms are functioning at lower volumes, and the VCA is set to "gate."  You can also hear it when you adjust the cutoff to a quieter level. At higher volumes the problem goes away.  When the oscillator isn't producing any sounds (ie all the knobs are fully  set counter-clockwise), you can just hear the clicks of me depressing and releasing keys. Can someone tell me if this is normal or do I have a defective Microbrute?

I'm kind of new to synthesizers so I hope I'm making sense here.

I only notice when using the headphone outs (have the volume lower), but at the high volume I use to run it's mono out through my Octatrack it's not a problem.

A symptom of the fast envelope?

The gate is like an envelope with very fast attack and release, and sustain at maximum.
The clicks you ear are from the VCA, when the gate opens the VCA changes from fully closed to fully opened in a very short time, that could create a click, plus the VCA could leak a bit of CV in the audio, so the audio output is slightly offset for a short period of time.
if it's not very loud, It's quiet normal

Thanks for the response.  That explains what I'm hearing.  It's a fun machine and I love what it can do.

Hi,
I'm getting a click when I have a sequence running, audio through headphone jack, and everything turned off. Is this normal?
Thanks!
