Connection to Software failed
« on: December 29, 2012, 10:38:52 am »
hi there

I received the Minibrute 3 weeks ago and now wanted to try to connect with their software "minibrute connection".
The software has been extracted with the mfb file. As I open the software it first tries to connect but fails.
It says: "Unable to communicate with MiniBrute. Closing connection!".
I turned off and on again, didn't help
I swaped the usb cable, didn't help
I ran the software as an administrator, didn't help.

If I use it as a midicontroller it works, I get a signal, so usb connection seems fine to me.
Any help?

I use Win7 with latest updates und just downloaded software 1.0.1-

Hi,
it's because the firmware is older than your Editor.
Just Ignore this message, go to firmware tab, and start the update. It should work fine.
If not:
-powerup the machine with both octave switches pressed -> the 5 octaves LEDs should be On.
- launch Editor, go to firmware and start update.

Let me know

Thank you Bruno, it took me about 5 times to make it work. 4 times it was not able to download the firmware and I had to end the process.
Now it's fine. Firmware is up to date with 1.0.1 and I can use the editor.

Thanks for the support.

Hi,

My Minibrute was 1.0.1 and I just tried to update to 1.0.2.1.

I also had the ""Unable to communicate with MiniBrute. Closing connection!"" error message, and I had to use the "octave up/down" trick so that the firmware update worked.

Now the editor says the Minibrute is 1.0.2.1 so the update worked,, but it still can't communicate, I tried rebooting the MB several times already :(

Hi,

Same trouble here. I've tried all the above methods but am still getting the connection error message.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I tried all that too & it still doesn't work. The only thing i havn't tried yet is running my pc on 32 bit o/s instead of 64 bit...

...I'll give it a go.

what it your OS and version?
What is the error message you got?

if on windows be sure no other software has open teh usb/midi port. Windows usb midi driver is limited to 1 client at a time.

I'm on windows 7 64 bit. The brute is up to date on the firmware. I set the synth when it was new using this computer, no problem then but now it's not communicating. "Unable to connect with minibrute. Closing connection"
A royal pain in the backside just to flick a couple of switches. It's like the obvious design flaw in the death star.  >:(

It looks like you are using a connection software that is (much) newer than the Firmware in the machine? Or that no messages are received from Minibrute.
Can you give a try to the enclosed TechNote, to force the firmware update?

Let me know.

Well, i've done all of that and it just will not connect. Fat lot of good the software is then !  >:(  Might think twice about getting that microbrute too now if this is the story .

does Windows recognize it, in device manager?
Can you use it with a DAW or another midi software?
Did you try on another computer?

No it doesn't show up in device manager. I don't use any other computer & this is the laptop that i used when the unit was new to set it.
I can't see what's changed. I bought the Brute new in January this year & one of the first things i did was to open the software & set the unit as i wanted it as a starter thinking that i could always change it later if i needed to. Then about a month ago i tried to connect up again & nothing. Just error messages. The method in your pdf doesn't work, i have tried it & when it failed i have tried again. I have tried connecting it up with the software open & with the software closed.
As for the DAW thing, i don't use one , period.

Just a thought here, this would qualify as a fault wouldn't it ? I mean, it's part of the operating system of the synth & it doesn't work.
I could return it & get my money back couldn't i as it's still under warranty. Only had it 9 months.  ???

No it doesn't show up in device manager.
nothing at all, or is it marked as faulty, in unknown devices?
You should definitely double check usb cable, use another USB port, and ultimately try on another computer.
The USB interface on the mini "can" be fried, but it's every unlikely to happens, especially if you haven't used it. I have never heard of such a case.
If you still can figure it out you'll have to contact technical support, for a RMA.
