MIDI out/thru
« on: December 23, 2022, 10:26:13 pm »
Hi all!

I am close to get MiniFreak.

There’s one feature which would amazing but I am afraid it’s not there (yet)…

MIx/Merge MidiFreaks own MIDI (notes from keyboard etc.) to Midi Thru. In other words add Freak’s Midi to input data and send it to thru port.

Possible or not?

I've never encountered a synth with MIDI In, Out and Through ports, where the Through port isn't a hardware echo of the In port, and I'm sure that's the case with the MnF too. So it's not technically possible.

Some synths with only In and Out ports have a software through function where In is echoed to Out and merged with the normal output. This is possible to do on an In/Out/Through configuration, but similar to the above, I have never seen it done. I guess  it might be seen as confusing in the triple port scenario.

I think your best bet is to use a small MIDI merger.

Hi Dr.!

You're probably right about Thru port. But maybe Out-port could merge internal Midi with incoming Midi data? In fact my Arturia Origin does that and it's great feature. With MiniFreak I am after simple as possible setup - I would not like to buy another MIDI box.

Ah, the Origin, you're right! I forgot (I have one myself), so I have to take that back, I have encountered a synth with that functionality, even though I've not used that feature :)

So yes, as mentioned, it's possible, also for the MnF, but it's not something that is common in synths. It's a useful feature though. Perhaps submit it as a feature request?

Edit: the feature being an option for soft MIDI through at the Out port, just like the MicroFreak has:
"Thru [Off, On] When "On", MIDI In data is echoed to the MIDI Out." (from the MicroFreak manual)

When reading MnF manual it seems that this feature isn’t there yet. Am I right?

Yes, it's not in the MiniFreak (yet...!), but in the MicroFreak.
