Please turn on Last Recent Posts for the forum.
SMF has this feature already right of the box.
Don't forget to set it for every user as default on top.
Admin > Themes & Layout Settings > Member Options - configure guest and new user options for theme
This will give your forum more life, and new topics won't go lost between all the subforums, until someone reaches there it takes years.
