How to get over 3000 original patches from the ESQ-1 and SQ80
« on: September 19, 2021, 05:31:19 pm »
I discovered a gear space thread with tonnes of original patch banks here:

https://gearspace.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1207777-ensoniq-esq-1-sq-80-ultimate-patch-collection-2.html?posted=1#post15636843

and attempted to load them into the software.  It sort of worked... but mixed up patches from various banks. So I could only load 40 out of 100s at any one time (and that was a random 40).  I've no idea why but if you split the sysex files into their own folders they load just fine.

Heres a demo showing how to do it. 9maybe it works easier on PC - this was via Mac)

On a PC, it seems you can't import sysex files more than 8 kb. Files of 10 kb result in a one preset bank.
Most banks from Gearspace are 8 kb. There are no macros but it is so simple to add them with the Learn function.
There often too low, to my taste. It's easily fixed.

Thanks for the link.

N.B. Loading the very few 10 kb. sysex files in the Cubase sysex editor results in a "ill formed sysex" warning. The 8 kb. files don't generate such a message. The 10 kb. files may be for Ensoniq synth consumption only.

The ESQ/SQ sysex bank files are always exactly 8,166 bytes long (8,192 on PC disk). If there are additional bytes, they are probably data that the synth had been sending before or after the bank itself was dumped, and should be trimmed off. I've had to do this several times with banks I've downloaded. The bytes to look for are the header:

F0 0F

and footer:

F7

Anything outside of those two markers is probably junk.

FYI: I should mention that I have sorted and categorised these, and many more, Ensoniq programs, and made all 5,762 available.  More info here:

This might help in choosing what to upload to the SQ80 V.

What I have not done, though, is create native Arturia files for them all. It seems a big mountain to climb.
