Which USB to Midi cable/box interface for the KSP?
« on: January 28, 2021, 05:43:37 pm »
Hi guys, I'm about to get rid of my Scarlett to move to UAD audio interface. The only problem with that is the UAD doesn't have Midi, unlike the Scarlett.

In such a case what do you guys do? I'd like to keep using Midi because in my experience USB has always more latency.

Could I use any of these to connect the KSP to Macbook (and then connect my synths to KSP on Midi too):

- https://www.thomann.de/gb/roland_um_one_mkii.htm ? (does it control pitch bend, is it class compliant?)
- https://www.iconnectivity.com/mioxc (1x1, 16 channel MIDI interface to USB-C)
- https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/midi/mio (1 in 1 out MIDI to USB)

Would such an adapter make my connection fully MIDI then, just as if I used an audio Midi interface?

Cheers

Any of those would likely do the trick, if you are only looking for a way to use midi on your PC.

It really is a shame, however.  The KSP would be all you would need, as it has two midi outs itself and a midi in, but with it not handling soft thru, it is pointless, as you can't rely on it to pass anything outside of the 4 sequencer tracks.  It can't do program change messages to external synths, midi cc, or aftertouch, either.  If this wasn't the case, you wouldn't need a midi interface at all, as the KSP could be your midi hub, like expected.

I got caught with this, last summer when I bought my KSP.  My previous Novation controller passed through EVERYTHING midi related and I was able to use it as my hub.  Boy was I in for a shock, when the KSP didn't work this way.  Luckily my RME interface does contain midi ports, but it meant rewiring my studio and scrapping all previous templates, just because of this change.

I feel you bro, but apparently thru and program change are coming in the next update. Until then I'll keep something simple as I'm coming more like from a purely Ableton/in-the-box background, and will dive into the KSP in the coming months. I just need a Midi keyboard that works on the spot for now, to control my vsts and one external synth.

Btw do you know if between those two there's a difference?

- https://www.iconnectivity.com/mioxc (1x1, 16 channel MIDI interface to USB-C)
- https://www.iconnectivity.com/products/midi/mio (1 in 1 out MIDI to USB)

Why is the first one 16 channels and the other not, and does it matter to take first to be able to assign the internal channels of the KSP? Is the roland more llke the first cable or the second one, can it transport all the KSP midi channels too?

Thanks for the help.

I am using the MioXL and I think it is fabulous. I can set a preset for when I am using just my analog synths and then I can use my setup with my DAW (Studio One) as well. I know the XL is the "big dog", but the options that you have are incredible. I highly recommend it. I run my KSP into it with one MIDI cable and I can rout all that I want from there in any situation.
