Need tips on how to create percussive sounds

Ive made a couple of half decent snares, kicks are eluding me even when self-oscillating the ladder filter. Syntoms are sounding like disco lasers at the moment. Any tips ??

Hey there Lloydforth.

To make a kick, in my experience you need a very fast yet gentle slope wise) envelope controlling the pitch of a sin wave. You can obviously experiment with other waves but that's how I used to do it with Operator (part of Ableton Live).

Messed around a bit with the MB and came up with something that sounds like a kick. Obviously you'd need to edit it a bit to give it a bit more girth but I'll just list down my settings and you can play around from there.

Pay attention to the ENV 2 & 3. I have a mod routing where ENV 3 is modulating the VCO 2 coarse setting. And the mod amount is -180 (negative 180 degrees).

You get a dirty grimey kick. But hey, it's a kick drum nonetheless :)

Hey !

As you have control over all the modulation amounts there are a lot of cool things to do percussion wise.

I attached an example of a kick and a snare, here is usually how I do it :

Kick

-The note you play is very important, make sure it is low enough from the start or you will have trouble getting enough bass
-VCO1 routed to Steiner LP24 with a triangle waveform (perhaps a tiny bit of metallizer)
-Env 3 routed to VCO 1 pitch with a moderate amount (0 to 50)
-Env 3 with no attack, no sustain and a short decay & release
-Steiner cutoff set to a low value
-Env Amount of Steiner set to max
-Env 1 with no attack, no sustain and a short decay & release
-Noise routed to steiner (or ladder)
-Noise level modulated by LFO 1 in Single mode with a sawtooth to create a very short envelope


From experience I found out using filtered triangles instead of sine wave resulted in richer and more realistic tones !

For the snare, the principle is similar, with some changes

-The note played on the keyboard is at least one octave above
-Noise level routed to Ladder LP12 fully open
-LFO 1 time slower than the previous patch
-Blue noise instead of white
-Env 2 with no sustain and decay around 50%

Of courses these are pointers and there are many other ways to get cool drum sounds but I thought I'd share mine :)
