Beat step pro and iPad apps
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:16:00 pm »
Hey
I tried using the search but no luck
I am curious if I can use the beat step pro to sequence iSEM and animoog as well as ielectribe for example!?
Also if it would work as a controller for gadget?
Or even if anyone managed to sync the BSP to gadget and use it to sequence a minibrute
I know I am kinda all over the place but I am trying to find the best way to incorporate iPad apps with a hardware setup!
Cheers

I use my beatstep first generation with all my ipad apps so why not ?

Maybe you have to use a powered hub if the ipad doesn't send enough.

I use a Dlink 7 ports powered for my MS20ic (ms20 controller)

Cool thanks
So do you use the y shaped USB cable to power the beatstep pro?
Also are you using an audio interface for the iPad?
Are you able to sync the beatstep pro sequencing animoog with gadget for example?
Gadget is a really cool sequencer environment but I find sonically it is tame due to the lack of effects, although the iM1 has breathed some new life into it for me lately!
Cheers

Yes the Y shaped cable,
the power side goes to a battery pack by RavPower 17000mA, size of a small hard disc.

It is good because you don't need to sit next to a wall socket. The other end goes to iPad into an unpowered USB splitter (2 in 1 or 3 in 1) and into CKK cable. The reason for that is: if you gonna use an external midi controller you got a junction and because if you plug in BSP directly into CKK iPad will say not enough power or something...The splitter does something to iPad so it lets you plug in controllers.

For audio out I use a small head phone amp, fed into my power amp into speakers.

You can sync almost everything in Audiobus I use BSP as a master and all follows. Animoog and iSem and a drum machine on ch.10 ...or sometimes Loopy as master.

BS -16 is great or iM1 you can assign channels etc...Different apps act differently, you have to try them out.
But yes it works great and more apps are getting LINK.
Do not use a powered usb hub because it is useless, can't power iPad while using it. The pack is for BSP

I've never been able to use BeatStep PRO with iPad/iPhone.
Y cable (and AC adaptor) or not.

I always get the not enough power for the device message.

(Althtough it was working very well with BeatStep, first of the name)

(Maybe I'm doing something wrong but the proccess seems quite straight forward : plug Y cable ; USB to iPad in PC side ; USB to AC adaptor in the other side et roule ma poule)

Pinkcell there are a few existing threads here on using bsp with ipad,

I initially had the same issue with my ipad2 but I can confirm it is definitely possible to do.

Edit: typo

Thank you StutzJr !

I followed the magic steps mentionned by 'ben arturia' but without success.
I posted my process. Maybe you could find out what I'm doing wrong :

I don't know why it doesn't work.
To avoid this problem, get a small NON powered USB splitter. 2 in 1 is enough. You can even add a keyboard in the 2nd slot.
You still need the Y cable.
Then plug the USB cable out of BSP into CCK and it works, no rebooting or other nonsense needed.
What do you use for power supply into the Y cable?

This splitter does something to iPad that it doesn't need the previous reboot. Works well.

Hi faster,

To be sure I got it right :

1) base of Y cable in BSP
2) power supply (I use an AC adaptor) to the PWR branch of Y cable
3) PC branch of Y cable to CCK (I had to google these letters ^^) THROUGH an (normally useless) non powered usb splitter

You got it. And it works. That's how I use it. Sometimes bat. pack, other times wall socket.

The un-powered USB hub is the most useful part in the chain. It also lets you add a keyboard midi controller into the 2nd USB port (for example).

I also plug my kbd controller into midi in of BSP for different purpose-control.

Mmm...
To get the cute 2in1 hub shipped to France, I must add 13.5$ and maybe also taxes, leading to at least 23$.

I tried my own NON powered 4 ports USB2 Hub (came with RockBand Wii!) and I get the same result as with the SHIFT-STOP bit :
No more "too much power" message but no BeatStep Pro in midi devices of apps.

UNTIL... I switched the 2 USB cables!!
I use from now on the cable that came with BSP on the PC branch of Y cable and moved the no-name-and-highly-suspicious other USB cable to PWR branch.

And it works like this!

(I also add, as you smartly suggested, a midi keyboard -QuNexus- plugged in one of the others ports of my hub with success : The 3 midi ports of the QuNexus immediately appeared in midi devices.)

Now that it works at least, I still can't use it : iPad was low battery and switched off 2 minutes ago ;)

I may buy the battery pack you mentioned on the other thread (unless the new Pocket Operators launch next days ;))

Thanks for your answers anyway!

Hey, I am in France too, I got all the stuff from Amazon.fr
They sell a mini USB hub 3 in 1 with a light monitor. Just like the cute one but 3 ports.
The one from US is not worth the price. .. I didn't know where you're from.

I always use good quality cables, it eliminates possible problems and unwanted noise.

The battery pack is top quality, RavPower got the highest ratings in the smart battery packs and the best mA capacity.
Glad you got it working  :)
