Popping sound - basic wavetable patch
« on: March 13, 2022, 02:02:34 am »
Hi,

Here is a very basic patch:
Engine 1 - wavetable - Building Waves/Freq Mod Half.

When I play C1-C2, each note begins with an audible pop. It's even more severe when swittching Keyboard -> Mono Mode.

Can this be mitigated, since Pigments doesn't allow to manually set the phase in degrees?

I also contacted support but they just suggested to reset preferences.

Edit: sound examples attached.

Hi,

Can you post a sound example?
If it's only in one octave, then have you checked you don't overdrive anything or have a too low buffer setting for your soundcard?

Is it the click when the gate opens you talk about?'

What does Phase have to do with it?

sound examples attached to first post. it's not one octave, just easier to hear in that register. the wavetable starts at a glitch point, I assumed adding a phase offset would mitigate it.

Good you have added the sound example now.

What i hear is clicking when the gate open and close. All synths click more or less at certain attack and/ or release times. The click is especially easy to hear with low harmonic sounds like the one you use that's close to a Sine waveform.
And it's very easy to hear in the low end.
It would be nice if the click was less pronounced.

In your del43 sound example it's like there is a wooble. I don't have that here. Perhaps you have changed some settings or added something that make that wooble?
I select a default preset, and then add the waveform you mentioned. That's it.

Which synth do you have that don't have any audioble clicks with certain settings?

if another synth clicks that tells me nothing about how to fix the problem in pigments

It's natural a synth click. As i said all synth does it more or less. Also hardware synths. It does'nt have to be a problem to be fixed. And at least not something that make a synth unusable. If that was the case, then loast of music have been made with unusable instruments.
But yes as i said, i wish the click was less.

Here is an example from a hardware Yamaha DX7. At the time 17:09 you hear a sound that can be compared with the sound you have posted. Thwre is very loud audioble clicks.:

So according to you the Yamaha DX7, the synth of the 80's was and is unusable?

Hello!
if i press a key with lp filter open, release note, close fiter all way down and press key again, there is a a short annoying attack even when amp env attack is set to quarter way up. it is gone after press key again. this is the only synth wich is behaving like this.
Ableton 10 with win pc.

While I agree with the other posters on this, I usually solve wavetable pops by slightly adjusting the attack. For your example, set ENV2 ATTACK to 0.30 or so and the pop disappears (I tried it). Automatically removing 'pops' from wavetables has undesirable effects for sounds where you want a harsh attack (e.g. high hat). Whenever you force a DAC to go from nothing to fully-saturated, you're going to perceive the change in output as a pop.

Hi,

I don't know about other synths on this, but i can confirm Pigments does this, and that's not good.
Pigments also have some random clicks that's hard to explain, and perhaps that's about the same.
Perhaps it's the same thing that cause louder clicks, that it have to be.
I do think there is room for improvement regarding clicks in Pigments, even if some amount of click is normal when the gate opens and closes.

I suggest you create another topic about this and/or contact Arturia support and report the behavior you write about.
