Pads not triggering sound

Hey,
I just bought a Minibrute 2S, my first foray into analogue synth (have used plenty of VST synths so familiar with the basic functions although I'm sure I have some gaps in my knowledge). Getting set up and I can't get any sound when using the pad keys. I have tried setting the synth up to the match "default preset", when I play back the sequencer I hear sound but hitting the pad keys does nothing. Am I missing something obvious or have I got a faulty unit?

So I decided to try a factory reset, after which the first 8 keys would sound, but no other keys and the octave shift buttons wouldn't work. After turning the unit off and then turning it on later, the keys once again failed to produce sound. I did another factory reset and the the first 8 keys produced sound but again, no octave shift etc. Safe to assume I have a faulty unit?
