PC spec for Mg modular
« on: May 12, 2005, 12:48:10 am »
I've been a synth player for a long time (from VCS3 in the seventies to Mg Voyager recently), but I've never used a soft synth yet.

I'm having a new PC built soon, and I'd like to run the Arturia Mg modular software as well as a few other softsynths (Arturia's ARP 2600, plus a PPG Wave 2.2 and a VCS3 - I know there's a Wave, but I'd be grateful for any info on a VCS3 softsynth.

If you were in my position, about to buy a PC with the Mg modular in mind, and knowing what you know from having been using this software, what sort of spec would you go for?

I've seen Arturia's minimum spec, of course, but I'm looking for more of an optimum spec.

- thanks

If you can, go for the high clocks : 3,2GHz and more, Arturia jewels are a little cpu expensive ( in terms of  "weight" on cpu my CS-80V weighs almost like it's hardware model  ), also add loads of RAM ( 1GB and more ) to prevent critical slowing of performance when working with a DAW and instrument featured as plug-in. LBNL try to find a good audio card with low latency....you can go from affordable things (M-audio for example) which provide quite good performance though to highly expensive hi-end cards such as Lynx and RME...

Hope to be helpful     8)

Thanks. That's the kind of information I'm after. I had a feeling the specs I'd seen could be on the low side, and what you've said seems to confirm that.

I may not need as much RAM, as I'm not running PC-based recording stuff (I use hardware for that), but of course I may want to use a more advanced sequencer than the one with the modular at some point, which would push the system requirements up.

Any thoughts on hard drive size? I don't think Arturia mentioned that in their spec - and temporary files would push up the space requirement, of course. I'm inclined to take the rquirement for the modular, multiply by four for other softsynths, and then double the figure I get at that point. The other main use for this PC is just Internet access, so I know what I need for that.

Well the space required isn't much at all and moreover the actual standard of HDs never goes under 80GBs, it will be quite easy for you to find one at convenient prices !
