Keylab Midi In?
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:59:47 pm »
Hi
Can anybody tell me what the  ( 5 pin din  ) Midi IN is used for
as the keylab is just a controller with no internal sounds or arp feature

and firm wear updates are done via USB

I Can't see a use for it

can anybody tell me what its used for ?

cheers

Usually, USB-MIDI controllers with MIDI-IN are used to work as a MIDI DIN-to-USB interface i.e. to allow you to connect  a(nother) MIDI DIN-only device to your computer through that controller's USB.

HI Koshdukai

Many thanks for the explanation ,  I have ben trying to find out why it had a din in  for ages

so just to make sure I have understood correctly

Just for arguments sake, I have an old analog synth with only  din midi  in/out
and I don't have a midi interface on my computer
I could take the mdii out from my old synth and plug it in to the midi din in on my controller keyboard
and  record the midi via usb to my daw.?

so its just like having an external midi interface that has usb on it, except that its built in to my controller

If I understand you correctly

Many many thanks for showing me the Light
you don't realise how long this question has been bugging me

cheers

Exactly :)

Some controllers show up to the computer as 2 MIDI ports (the keyboard and its DYN input). My M-Audio Axiom works like that. Spark (not SparkLE) also does that.

Others, like the KeyLabs, show up as 1 MIDI port, merging its keyboard input with its DIN input i.e. both (what you play on them and what you send into its DYN in) show up in the same (USB-MIDI) port.

You can use MIDI Channel to keep those sources separate, like, playing Arturia's Vox upper keyb with Keylab sending on MIDI Chn1 and Vox's lower keyb with your synth's DYN sending on MIDI Chn2
That's just a quick simple example.
