Instr tab: Sounds not saving
« on: December 17, 2014, 04:13:45 pm »
Hi

When in the LIBRARY menu and in the INSTR. tab below that, when scrolling through the entire list, Spark will open up the last sound you land on. If you leave it a few seconds the blue task bar shows it loading, yet if you move onto another drum pad to search for a new sound, the previous sound isn't saved. You have to let the sound open, then click the scroll wheel in order for it to save the selected drum before moving on to edit a new drum sound. You have no reporting when you click the wheel to say that the sound has opened, this happens when you scroll though the list but doesn't save the selection.

Thanks, Stuart

Hi Terry

Yeah, I get that, loading onto the pad for preview is fine, but the bug specifically is that you have to click on the wheel for it to save it to that pad, before moving on. If it's loading onto the pad surely it should stay there? When you decide you like a particular sound, clicking the wheel doesn't give you any feedback to say that it's been assigned (for want of a better word) to that pad. Moving on without clicking the wheel reverts the pad to the previous sound.

My point is that the loading part gives the impression that it's saved to the pad, which it isn't. The extra step of clicking the wheel to is fine but doesn't give you feedback that it has happened.

Edit: The Auto Preview is a bit of a misnomer in that respect as it previews the sound anyway (Presuming you're editing a pad that has a sound/beat on it)

Thanks, Stuart

Hi Terry

Thanks, I did mention this to Kevin a while back, he was in full on release mode so it may have been mislaid :)

Hi Terry,

This is one of my long term gripes about updates with Spark. I posted this earlier.

http://forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=82353.120

I want to see more focus on the hardware functionality. There's a danger that pretty soon the hardware will be almost (bar pads) irrelevant when using Spark.

The playability is there, but there's no feedback from the unit that it has done what you have asked it to do. There is random reporting (labels) when you go through menus and it's hard to know where you are without always having an eye on the software.

Thanks, Stuart

I think the auto preview is unfinished

Im not sure about the hardware but the GUI it seems the single click function is replaced with the double click at the momment

Page 79 of the manual describes it

Hi Terry,

Yeah I have the manual. I'm not concerned with the GUI right now, i'm talking about creating a kit on the hardware.

I have a challenge for you.

Pick up the hardware and not looking at the software, open up a kit and edit sounds and parameters on each pad (from the instr. menu for each pad) No peeking :) You are now reliant on the LCD telling you what's happening and more importantly, telling you where you are.

You have to remember to click the jog wheel every time you move pads, even tho you can visibly hear the difference in sounds. If you forget or you're tied up in the moment of creating a banging kit, you'll forget to do that step and loose your work.

Sorry, there's no prizes :)

Thanks, Stuart

OK i understand why I was confused

I was testing before with a pattern playing and just then with the sequencer stopped

When the sequence/song is playing and your in the library/instr browser

The auditoning sound will load and play as the pattern is triggering it

Click back to main and the sample will go back to the original

So the auditioning functions as it should just a little quirky  ;D

Exactly, so in my opinion the Auto Preview is superfluous. You'd only edit a sound that was part of a pattern you wanted to edit, right?

Click back to main and the sample will go back to the original

Which, again in my opinion is a click too far. Hearing the audition sound when editing, you'd presume it was there to stay. So when you move the pad and it reverts, you get a surprise. = bad.

It just means you have to remember to click before moving on, which if you remember is fine, but work can be easily lost if you're in the moment.

Thanks, Stuart

Also remember you can double click on the dial on the controller to save to pad while you scroll for sounds. no mouse needed.

Yeah, like I said. It's fine if you remember but seeing as you are already hearing the sound, I don't see why that's necessary.

How you getting on with that challenge? ;)

So the point is, it's difficult to use the controller solely on its own, there always has to an eye on the screen while moving controls on the hardware, which seems incredibly counter productive to me.

The kit types show up in the hardware, which is on the same level as the instr, kit tabs so I don't see a major recode to get these names into the hardware.

Thanks, Stuart
