VDM midi assignments
« on: July 12, 2012, 05:23:51 am »

Seamless integration : Spark Vintage integrates seamlessly with any DAW as a plugin (RTAS, AU , VST3) and also features MIDI assignment on all its key knobs and pads, making it compatible with your favorite MIDI controllers, whether they are keyboards or drumpads.

Is it possible to use midi learn for all knobs and buttons with VDM or what does key knobs and pads mean?
How to do it?
I canīt find anything in the manuals about it ???

I have tried to use Automap learn, but no action seems to be transmitted via midi connection on my MBP :o

To be able to create a midi template I need a kind of implementation chart, which parameters are assigned to the different functions by default.

I'm assuming you are using the extra MIDI Control Centre software that is installed aside spark. Here you can map to your hearts content.

Thanks, but I have only Spark VDM without hardware.
So thereīs no MIDI Control Center installed for it.

the idea is that you use the hardware, why would Arturia give you the option to use your own controller when they sell one of their own :)

Because they advertise it as being possible?
See my quote in the first post, thatīs a copy from their description of VDM.

I can assign some parameters and map some functions, but not the ones I need.

Just tried to map the VDM pads to the SL pads, but it wasnīt possible.
Automap put another function on the pad??
Tried to map Slicer effect to a button and I got another function again.
Last try mapping X/Y pad to Filter and got LP bypass on it.

REC,START,STOP, metronome or pattern 1-16, song select no chance to map or learn.
These could be standard MIDI commands like MTC, bank select MSB/LSB for song/patterns, but that doesnīt seem to work.
For making a template without Automap I need the implementation chart of VDM.

I have a similar problem.
I can only assing/MIDI learn (cmd-click on Mac) some VDM parameters, like Master Volume, Shuffle, the Loop section.
But I can't MIDI learn for example the Main Cutoff, Resonance, Aux 1, Aux 2 or the FX pad parameters.
Is there a trick?

After reinstalling VDM the cmd click learning is working now.
Before it didnīt take this combination ???

I will test this weekend what can be done.

Experienced some heavy crashes and GUI hang with Ableton Live 8 and the automapped (wrapped) versions of VDM today.
I fear these two donīt like each other.

Too bad, it seems Automap doesnīt like drum machines.
Have similar problems with Stylus RMX.
Oberheim SEM V and others are running fine with it.

Does the cmd click also work with the Cutoff, Resonance, Aux 1+2 faders?

If you are using Automap, don't try the MIDI Learn feature but create a mapping manually by using the parameter list in the edit window of Automap. The list for the Spark plugin is very long and contains nearly all mappable parameters - but to my disappointment not the sequencer buttons >:(

Sorry, I assumed that because they had the hardware controller, mapping of the software wasnt possible.

The software is the same as Spark CDM (just without import functions for own samples), and it is controllable via MIDI. But the editor wants Spark hardware, so VDM users can't work with it.

The software GUI of Spark has some restrictions when trying to use any MIDI learn function of other controller hard-/software, i.e. NRPN data, bugs when trying CMD-click and multi-page layout with graphic layering.

But I can use my Maschine controller editor software to map it's knobs/buttons (like Start/Stop, Rec) directly to the corresponding elements of the VDM GUI - not all, but most of them.

Glad to read you see it the same way ;)

I think I have to think about my workflow and adapt it to the software I use.
It should be the opposite, but this seems to be wishful thinking nowadays.
