output headroom TOO LOW!!!
« on: July 17, 2010, 09:51:26 pm »
so I just read through another thread where there have been changes on overall volume output. Currently with v1.2.5 it is too low. I can't get more than -30db out of a single layer.

any chance of getting this to a more practical output level?

thanks

As you probably read on the other thread, we have hardware limitations that make it impossible for us to increase the overall volume without introducing more compression.
It has been discussed that maybe we will provide some setting knob to balance between loud/compressed and quiet/clean sound. But we can't have higher output level with exactly the same sound color.
On the other hand, I think that this is a common issue on multitimbral synthesizers: for example, the output level is also low on the Nord Lead 2X.

That seems to me quite low. In previous firmware I claimed about the low volume as well. I tested different cables and came to peaks about -12 dB/ -14dB. With the recent firmware I come to -8dB/-6dB.

During my tests I figured out that unbalanced cables do best. Moreover it mattered which entries of my audio interface I was using. (Konnekt 24D). Also the patchbay ate some dBs...

I think the output is a very little bit below a Virus' output for example.

However pushing the signal near to 0 dB is ok for me, because the noise level isn't that high in the Origin.

yea, im using the UA 2192 D/A to my RME Hammerfall DSP Digiface. Assuming everything is good and calibrated (which I checked), -30db is correct.

to be more specific. that is about all I can get without introducing distortion into the path (which you can immediately hear in filter responses). and this gets us right back to the dB issue.

I wish there was an easy answer here. all I know is that the Origin in general seems to be very low compared to other synths I have used/owned.

cheers!

Holografique, I agree. It's by far the lowest output that I have ever experienced in my synthesizer life! (approx. 20 synths and modules over the years: Yamaha, Roland, Clavia, Virus, Waldorf etc.)

Although it isn't a serious problem, I find it a bit curious. I understand the reasons for keeping it low, but it's too low. I wish Arturia would raise it a notch or two.. ;)
