TI-Style integration please
« on: January 25, 2009, 02:52:34 am »
I expect to be purchasing Origin shortly. Can you tell me will there be a plugin version that opens up in a DAW as a VST/ Audio Unit? With audio transfer (input and output) over USB? I think this would really seal the deal for me.

We have a list of features that will be added to next firmware versions: more templates, more modules and effects, MIDI controller capability... The integration within a DAW thru a VST/AU plugin is one of them. However you'll likely have to wait until the end of 2009 to get this plugin.

Are you?  :)

Yes, this template is in the list.... Will likely be a template of the CS80 without the 'V': no built-in multi that is a CS80 template preset will contain parameters for the 2 synthesis lines I and II, and PROGRAM modules (RingMod, SubOsc...), the arpeggiator, etc... The modulation matrix provided in the V plugin will probably be available also.

I'm willing to buy an Origin as soon as there is the VST Integration / USB Audio Output.

End of 2009 passed already and I don't see the plugin coming in next monthes.

Any clue from your side?

As you probably know, it took us a lot of time to finalize the 1.1 version which is to be announced very soon. As a consequence every other developments have been delayed. Next step is the 1.5 version that will include some more emulation of famous vintage synths (what we call "template"), namely (and likely) CS80, ARP2600 and Jupiter8, enhancements of the ergonomics and likely some CPU optimizations (better polyphony).

Concerning the TI like integration, the situation is more complex. Not everybody at Arturia is convinced that this feature worth the development cost. Indeed, a TI like integration is a very complex stuff, risky, and that may need a lot of time - and money - to make it work. So my boss is still weighing the pros and cons.

Sorry to say this, but exactly that is what irretates me.

" In the coming free updates, it will also allow
    * to see and use Origin as a plug-in within the main sequencer programs
    * to edit on the computer features available on the Origin screen."

(taken from your website)

I tested Origin and I really loved the handling and sound, but announced features are delayed and I wonder about the support in the future. Support is costly and highly depends on sold units, I guess. Actually I don't think that selling is well. The price is quite high and a better clou is the lifeless forum here. Take the offered presets in the preset zone for example. There is not that much activity, right?

Moreover your boss said VST-Integration is in development and it will come end of 2009. Later the date was given as beginning of 2010, then for summer 2010. As shown above, even your website mentions this feature as certain. Now I learn that nothing is concrete or even decided. It appears that promised features are delayed for what reason ever. (And I didn't mention the Origin Keyboard Version at all.)

Don't get me wrong: I really appreciate that there a coming more templates and as a good surprise there will be this tonewheel and leslie effect, what shows you do care about the future of the Origin. But please stop announcing features, which future is uncertain. Please improve existing features. For example the reverb should get an update very soon.

But for me as potential buyer the situation looks like this:

I pay a price what is 15%-20% above the price of your competitors and I have to trust in you and the success of the unit to get all the promised features.

That keeps me waiting until I see the features I want.

Even small companies with lag of financial power can provide biggest serverice and continous improvements. Have a look at Fractal Audios Axe-FX. Check the forum there. That is activity.

Let me be slightly more accurate on my colleague's talk: yes the virtual instrument integration is expected, but to avoid any misunderstanding no firm release date has been fixed yet. We try to learn from our past errors, so you will probably appreciate we don't post a date as long as we don't have a clear sight on this.

Early developments have raised unexpected technical obstacles that should considerably lengthen initial development schedules. Our friends from a well-known German company have worked years before obtaining an usable version of the "Total Integration"; definitely this is not a trivial project, even for our clever development team. We are even currently analyzing potential exterior contributions, upon which you will apologize if we don't communicate more for the moment.

Still weighing the pros and cons, yes, but not on the virtual instrument integration itself, rather on the ways to obtain it as fast and efficiently as possible. For the moment, we won't be able to reveal much more details on this particular subject.

Even if the virtual instrument integration is awaited, this should not prevent you to consider Origin as a fully autonomous modular system with its own character, much powerful by itself without the need of a computer.

Thanks for your words. That sounds much different than the words of your collegue.

I take this as promise that the VST-Integration will come sooner or later, but it is sure, it will be released some day.
