what i'm doing to avoid this is pretty simple:
just copy your pattern and delete all the pads you want to mute. when you open the project start with pattern1 where only a few sounds are played. there you can activate the mute on all the pads you want and then go to the second pattern, where all pads are playing. the pads are stil muted when you change the pattern. then you can activate one after another.
