hmmm, that's strange.
Because 1.6.1.1 is exactly solving this crash issue when controller is connected.
Can you check the version number in the about panel (click on the Spark logo at the middle of Spark center panel)?

So it seems that the 1.6.1..1 has not been correctly installed.
Try deleting Spark.component, located in:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

Then reinstall 1.6.1.1

btw: there is another RC available here.

It includes the fix for this problem.

sorry - but with the april build it's still crashing in logic pro 9
seems like if i open an old project an then a new one it comes to the crash..
i can open old projects once and then save it new - think this is a workaround i can live with

So it's only happening when you load a project saved with 1.5 then open a new project?
