For instance a "toggle mode". One hits the record button and recording/overwriting(!!!) happens for one pattern length then automatically switches to playback. When overwrite is needed just hit the record button again.
In the actual "overwrite" mode (when hitting record and not activating overdub), the old notes still come through (which can be useful but also a pain in the a...).
