the "hold keys" function of the hold button (my favorite function of the keystep) stopped working after I powered the keystep using a usb cable instead of the usual 9v adapter (the usb cable moved slightly and the power was disconnected - perhaps a faulty usb connector). All other functions seem to work, including the hold button holding in arp mode and sending a sustain midi msg using the hold button, but it no longer holds notes when the arp/seq is stopped. I tried updating the firmware, trying different hold button settings in the MCC etc.

And the next day the same thing happened to another keystep

Weird, did it happen to both when powering via USB?
Try using the 9v power and doing a factory reset by pressing the octave up and down buttons while powering on.  Back up your patterns first in MCC, of course.
Currently running https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1311723 / www.modulargrid.net, sequencing with KSP and recording with a Zoom (no DAW involved, for better or worse ;) )

thanks, I already tried that, didn't help

I also tried downgrading the firmware to two old versions I found and then upgrading it back to the newest one
