Chromatic Glissando
« on: April 09, 2020, 10:33:06 pm »
I am learning "Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy and need the chromatic glissando effect used during the intro. I believe the original Yamaha CS-80 could do this using the Gliss switches and sliders in the lower panel section. I've played around with it, but all I can get is portamento or a continuous slide rather than discrete half-step notes. Anyone know which combination of settings will yield this effect on CS-80 V3?

Hi,

To get Glissando, then the PORTA - GLISS switch shall be switched towards the GLISS labe (down), and the PORTAGLISS switch shall be switched away from the label (up).
The tempo is still set with the white SHORT - LONG slider.

Have fun.

Thank you, LBH. I've tried playing with the PORTA - GLISS switch and SHORT - LONG sliders with inconsistent results. On some CS-80 presets, the glissando works and on others it doesn't. Not sure if there is another setting that I am missing.

Assuming I can figure this out, can the glissando effect be activated and deactivated through a footswitch, like a sustain pedal MIDI CC 64? I don't want the glissando to activate until I have established my root chord.

Your welcome,

I've tried playing with the PORTA - GLISS switch and SHORT - LONG sliders with inconsistent results. On some CS-80 presets, the glissando works and on others it doesn't. Not sure if there is another setting that I am missing.
In the MULTI section Portamento (PORTA) can be activated/ deactivated pr voice. Be sure the needed voices is activated to get portamento. If PORTA is deactivated you'll get no effect.

Also i suggest you try out the different playmodes playing both legato and none legato notes.
When using the UNISON modes the priority have and impact for the effect when playing legato.
In the poly playmodes RANDOM mode that's the original hardware playmode might work best, as it trigger the effect no matter how you play. But you might wan't the effect the other modes offer. I'm not sure all the playmodes impact on the effect is correct.

can the glissando effect be activated and deactivated through a footswitch, like a sustain pedal MIDI CC 64?
If you switch the PORTAGLISS switch towards the label (down position), then the foot-/ sustain pedal switch Portamento on/ off.
Also you can use the automation parameter PORTA in a host to switch the effect on/ off.

Thanks! I think I was missing the MULTI per voice options because glissando was sometimes doing nothing, depending on the preset selected. Also, thank you for confirming that I can use the sustain pedal to enable/disable GLISS.
