Importing silent sample: Pigment adds white noise ?
« on: January 15, 2020, 09:11:48 am »
Hi,

I am trying to import a silent wave file into pigment.  This blank sample is used to create splits in multisampled instruments.
For exemple, engine 1 has samples on 3 octaves, and blank on the three upper octaves.
The Engine  2 has blank samples into slot A, B C, and samples on D, E, F
That way i can make a keyboard with bass on the left hand, and pads on the right hand.

I could do with white noise but the gain of each sample slots does not go to - infinite.
I think it is a good method to import a sample with silence in that case.

NB: the blank sample is 1 measure at 80 bpm, and the other samples are 2 measures at 80 bpm. May be the sample shoiiuld be 2 measures ?

Thanks
Mehdi

For some reason it look like a 16 bit WAV file become noise in Pigments-
A 24 bit or 32 bit float WAV file is silent. No noise.
This is the result for me using silent files made in Audacity.

I tried audacity and studio one 24 bits. Studio one has only half the noise (the last part of the sample is actually silent) . May be I should try 32 bits :-)

Yes try that. But i would say that even the 16 bit should be silent. Actually the 16 bit sample i tried show as a noise waveform when imported. That's strange. It's silent when openend in a player or in Mellotron or CMI V if i keep it at 16 bit.

The one I created in Audacity first looked silent, but when loaded in studio one and wave display zoomed in, it shows a very low amount of white noise.
So I have  put all levels to -infinite and re-exporrted from studio one. Now I have a file that is silent on the second part only.... better :-)

I will try again and let you know when done.

it worked in 32 bits only.

The file in 24bits shows high levels of noise and the 32 bit version shows nothing.

They are both from the same file created in studio one, and bits were changed at export only.

In the pics, you can see the exported waves re-imported into studio one (yellow and blue rectanges just above Pigments UI). They are both totally empty and it looks like it is Pigments that adds the noise.

I do not know if this is normal/desired or a bug.

The noisefloor is better the higher the bits. But i can't see why a 16 bit silent sample, that in other applications is silent should show and sound like a noise file in Pigments. To me this does'nt look like it have to do with the noisefloor only. To me it look like something Arturia should have a look at to see if it's an intended behavior, especially if it also have some sort of impact on other samples that's not silent. I assume Arturia will look at it.

May be because files are converted to 32 bits ? the noise could be from conversion/resampling algorythm or something like that.... or not !-)

This has been fixed in version 2.0.1.837- Look like it had to do with audio normalization.
