Origin 4-pole low pass filter - modeled after Curtis / CEM?
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:40:14 pm »

I have been doing some very close side by side comparisons between the Origin filter and a Prophet, and the filter really does seem to be based on the Curtis / CEM filter. Philippe can you comment on this? :)

Which filter type? Do you mean the filter typed "Origin"?

Yes exactly. When I set it to 4-pole low pass, turn the resonance up all the way and do a very slow envelope release, and do the same on my Prophet, the characteristics are very close.

I don't think it has been modelled based on the Curtis / SEM filter. The starting point was to design a lower cost filter compared to the emulated ones (MiniMg, CS80,...). Of course in the context of Origin "lower cost" doesn't mean low quality :)

I'll have to say that while it's been ages since I've been able to play a Prophet 5, from the music I have with Prophet used on it, the Origin filter is very close.  I used it to recreate some Prophet and Oberheim OB-8 patches from what I remember of those original synths, and have been very satisfied with it.
One day, I want my keyboard studio to be a synth museum like Hans Zimmer's
