Wave table list?
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:58:20 pm »
Working with a wave table oscillator would a lot less hit and miss for me if I had a list of the wave forms that the osc uses - some of the names in the table drop down are a little opaque  :-\  Does anyone have a better list of these waves?

Thanks

Andreas

Hi Andreas,
I don't have the Origin in front of me right now, but I was thinking that the Origin's VS osc waveform list and opaque names are probably taken directly from the origin Prophet VS. So I did some googling and found this great page,

http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000004

where it becomes apparent that even in the original Prophet VS manual there were descriptions for only a small subset of the waveforms. Towards the bottom of this thread, John Bowen himself (!), the guy who created most of the original Prophet VS waveforms, chimes in and explains the reason for the lack of descriptions and the opaque names, in maybe more detail even than you wanted to know  ;D  In the second post in that thread, someone posted the full list of waveforms in the original Prophet VS, which I assume is the same in the Origin.

And here is a link to the original Prophet VS manual. On page 15-37 are the descriptions for some of the waveforms (the ones that in John Bowen's words, "describe the waveshapes when there was some logic to it"). Very useful!

Thank for those links - you did a better job with Google than I managed  :)

If you want another perspective on the VS digital waves, I listed them in my thread here according to their sound character:

http://www.arturia.com/evolution/smf/index.php?topic=4524.0

The post is number 12, about 3/4 of the way down the page.  It might help when you want a certain type of wave sound instead of fishing for one by scrolling.
One day, I want my keyboard studio to be a synth museum like Hans Zimmer's
