Almost there! I'm one of those that like to use the sequencer as a compositional tool. For this a length of only 16 patterns won't cut it. At least 64 would be required and also if you could add number of repetitions for each step/pattern in the chain.

Additionally, pattern chaining would make sense, if overlapping notes won't get cut.
It might be hard to believe, but there are users out there, who compose longer then 4 bar melodies.
