Title: midi control and sequencer at the same time?

 i have recently acquired a microbrute, a beatstep, and a drumbrute but i can't figure out how to use the beatstep as a sequencer while it's the head of the midi chain. If i plug its midi out to the drumbrute's midi in while the drums out is going to the micros in,  it will only works to control the tempo and as an all stop. I am trying to figure out how to be able to at least see the tempo its playing so even if I can't synch it via midi, I can at least make it go the same speed as the drumbrute while sequencing patterns with the micro brute.
