Title: Can i use Laboratory without USB and still connect to the software via midi
Post by: stuey on July 02, 2012, 07:53:07 pm
Hi all,

First post to the forum, although I am a long time user of the V collection, analog factory and laboratory and now have used the demo of Spark, but I have a question before i purchase, which is also in the Spark forum (As also purchasing the Spark, and would like to use Laboratory in the same way)

I am using the V collection with just midi, all connected via a Motu timepiece as I don't want to mix using USB midi and 5 pin cable midi so I only use midi cables.

Will the Laboratory 61 connect to the software by using standard midi? And would I need to use the IAC bus in the Audio/Midi set up in OSX?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

I use Laboratory 61 with separate power supply and midi connections only.

Works fine.

But I'm on Windows 7.

In OSX all MIDI devices are connected via the CoreMIDI framework (customizable via AudioMIDI Setup app), no matter if they are connected via USB or standard MIDI 5-pin. So as long you could see a MIDI input device in the AL preferences dialog, you can use the keyboard with or without USB connection.

Yeah sure, I can set up my IAC Bus in AMS, so surely as long as I have the device in the incoming controller, I should be able to use it.

I'm just wondering if there is any non midi information that is sent down the USB cable
(Apart from power) that would hinder the user experience
