Title: Microfreak - No Midi IN or OUT
Post by: robaire@btinternet.com on February 16, 2022, 02:06:16 pm
I have the latest firmware update (4.0.1) but still cannot get any Midi IN or OUT via the Midi sockets on my Microfreak. I have tried every possible combination of settings and read numerous posts about this issue on the Arturia forum but nothing has worked. I cannot control the Microfreak with my Keystep 32/Keystep Pro or Beatstep and the Microfreak is unable to send Midi to other devices such as a Minilogue or Roland Boutique or via my Steinberg Audio Interface to my Macbook (Ableton, Bigwig and several software synths). The only Midi in or out I can get with the Microfreak is through usb which allows me to use it's keyboard to control other devices via Ableton

There are two types of mini jack to midi cables, they are not compatible. Arturia is not using the now standard one, so with other brands you should use the included adapter cables. Not sure this is it of course. With the Arturia midi control centre, you can check if the ports are not set to ff.

same here.
I am using the adapters provided with the microfreak.
Upgraded to last firmware
Used several different devices to send midi
Switched the midi cable
Checked the config in MCC and tried all configs suggested in formums.

-> Cannot get midi in or out from that machine.

I had a hard time getting it to work. There are settings in util whether to use usb, midi or both output. I have to use usb to get sequencer notes and arpeggios, but I can't output usb to the unit without a script someone in here wrote for cubase. I can input midi through the mini adapters that came with it...to be brief I have to change what midi ins and outs I'm using like 3 times over the course of recording midi and ending with an audio file. Never had a midi problem like this thing before, took me a few hours of messing with it to figure it all out, it really doesn't make any sense.

The same exact thing is happening ever since I got it. I can only use USB - I have been trying to set up a live set including the microfreak but this BS is preventing me.... anyone know how to fix this?

Hi, guys, did you send your issue to Arturia's support? It's like the 1st thing, which I recommend to do.

Anw, the main suspect in this case is the cable/adapter or bad settings, afaik.

You can test it with standard audio Y cable (1x stereo 3,5mm to 2x mono 6,3mm):
- unplug all cables from MF, then check if MF's MIDI out is enabled in MIDI submenu (output dest, arp/seq midi out, knob send ccs)
- plug Y's cable 3,5mm jack to MF's MIDI out and R 6,3mm jack to your soundcard's audio in (with gain set to 0dB) - leave L unplugged and avoid to touch it with anything metal, there's DC voltage on tip
- launch any wave editor (better with visualisation - my fav is Goldwave :)) or DAW
- assign proper audio input to new track, launch record
- play any key/sequence/arp, or just turn any knob on MF
- you could see digital signal represented by pulses on recorded waveform then

Hope it helps ;)

Anybody know where to get the cables that work?  I bought some that were expensive and it appears they don't work.
Picked up my freak 2nd hand and the guy didn't provide the jack cables.

BTW I'm in Ireland, so anywhere in Europe would be preferrable.

Thanks
