Title: Knobs
Post by: minus_ego on November 29, 2018, 06:53:36 pm
Hey Arturia,

It would be great if you guys could offer a guy some advice on acquiring some custom knobs for the Brutes.  Some smaller ones that resemble the rotary encoder knobs on the master cutoff and matrix modulation amount perhaps?  Thanks.

The pots have 6mm D shafts so any knob with those specs will fit. The flat of the D is in line with the indicator on the knobs, as opposed to the more common variety where the flat is perpendicular to the indicator and usually on the opposite side - I have a hard time finding knobs with this configuration. Pull off a knob to see it:

Code: [Select]
Arturia D shaft and pointer relationship:

indicator =>  |
shaft     =>  D

Same here Dr. J.  I found these but they look terrible in my opinion.  I really like the ones with the chrome caps but as you said I can't find any with the proper configuration.

Quite right. The orientation of the "D" is unusual. I've thought about changing the knobs (mostly to use a variety of colors, to tell the knobs apart quicker), I think if I did it I would try to find a D shaped insert, to fill in the empty space on the shaft, and then just use regular 1/4" knobs with the set screw.

Small bear electronics, a guitar pedal parts store, has an outstanding collection of knobs. The guy sells so many he is able to get the factory to make custom knobs and do custom colors.

At first, I was sort of wondering: why change the knobs?. But then I just went to feel my MB's pots, and now I realize that the ridges on the sides of the knobs are kind of tough on the fingers! Funny that I did not pay attention to this before, even after spending hours tweaking patches!. And yes, different colors would definitely help visually. So well worth looking into this.

I kind of like the feel of them actually, for me, it's more the colors that I feel would really set the front panel off very nicely.  This isn't a knock on the designers.  I like the industrial gray look but a few different color accents would be nice.

The world is full of knobs - the problem is the "6mm 90 degrees D-shaft" configuration. None of the suggested shops, apart from modologic in posting #3, carry any - they're as rare as hens teeth...

Other than that you can get such knobs for electric stoves - not quite the style we want :-)) More suitable ones, but still in the modologic style, can be found in some places like e.g. this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/6pcs-90-degree-indication-rotary-potentiometer-plastic-knob-cap-Volume-Mixer-disc-player-equalizer-half-shaft/32951314730.html?spm=2114.search0604.3.42.16bf3327pHprvt&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_4_10065_10068_319_317_10548_10696_10192_10084_453_454_10083_10618_10307_10820_10821_10301_10303_537_536_10059_10884_10887_100031_321_322_10103,searchweb201603_51,ppcSwitch_0) and this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/14pcs-for-Pioneer-DJ-MIXER-DJM-Mixer-Mixing-station-knob-cap-DIY-color-rubber-potentiometer-knob/32841461342.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000023.71.2a1477e4OHlz8u). Elma has some, and a few others can be found. Beware that the sweep of the rounded part of the D-shaft can also vary. I'm sure there are more but it's not easy find them, even for people experienced in parts sourcing...  I've never seen any in the chrome-top style (classic synth knob) that minus_ego mentioned though.

Oh right, 90 degree index marker offset, that is pretty uncommon.

Not sure if you found a knob that meets all of your requirements but here's some colorful ones, albeit plastic not metal/aluminum.  Check out the 90 degree Super Knob line.  They provide knobs for several Arturia products; Beatstep Pro, DrumBrute, MicroBrute, MiniLab.

Please let us know how you get on! If they fit and they’re the same quality as on the midi fighter twister I’m very interested.

Hi
on this forum someone said the knobs are 90
i just looked in the MxB manual  and it says the knobs are 270
Pot mode - Because the knobs are 270 pots and not 360 degree encoders
but I ordered 90

can any body confirm what knobs I should order
while I still have time to change my order

im panicking now that I have just spent 100 quid on the wrong knobs

cheers

Hmm,  yeah,  I just checked and the pointer sits clockwise next to the straight side, so thats the 270 degree style on your uploaded image. I don't have a lot of experience with knobs, but I can tell you this:

Just pull one of and see for yourself,  you are not gonna break anything. And you will have to, anyways, when your (hopefully correct) knobs arrive.

Cheers

I've read many technical manuals over my years and don't recall any of them documenting knob orientation. I wish the MB's manual was written to such detail.  Arturia, you have my vote to continue enhancing the manual with a lot more detail (and am not referring to knob orientation).

I'm assuming the manual is describing that all knobs are not the 'encoder' type, they all don't rotate 360 degrees.  Instead, most rotate 270 degrees.  Knob rotation is different than knob orientation.  Attached is a pic of the bottom side of the Gate knob.  You can compare that against what you've ordered.  Pleass note that's only one of its many knobs, so you may want to pull each knob and verify its orentation for ordering accuracy.  They are a tight fit but do pull straight off.

The 90-degree knob orientation matches what DrJustice shared.

Hi All

yep that's the ones I ordered, I did what you did and took a knob off
took a pic and sent it to the knob company
he confirmed its 90   PHEEEWW   I thought I was going to be 100 quid light

the guy at the company had a live chat on the web site and was very helpful

they are as I type in the hands of FedX  and should arrive to me on Mon 11th Feb

so once iv PIMPED up My MxB      ill post some pics

Don't slag me of for the colours iv chosen

Cheers
Kev

Hi
 IV PIMPED MY MxB

Knobs arrived after only 4 days   very impressed

Knobs have a nice soft but firm rubber feel to them
unlike the original hard plastic

some of the original knobs were a pain to get of almost broke a nail  lol

the new knobs fit nice and tight
the colours are nice and vibrant

now for the bits I don't like

the original knobs white line marker strip goes down the side of the knob then juts out
on to the knob skirt making it easy to see what setting the knob is at

on the new knobs its just a straight white strip  there is hardly and skirt at all
so therefore depending what angle your looking at the knobs from it can be hard to see the knob setting

The fader tips will have to go back as they are almost twice the size of the original fader tips
no chance of trying to fit them   ( bummer )

I have left the fader tips in the picture for reference

All in all   I am happy with the look and feel
apart from the couple of niggles I mentioned earlier

the idea behind my colours for the knobs
is  Pink for all oscillators
Red for any knob that increases the volume or input and output
orange for the Steiner filter  apart from output  Red
green for ladder filter  apart from output  Red

I know I'm going to get slaughtered for my colour choice    LOL

cheers
Kev

I like it! Too bad about the sliders.  Honestly though, nice touch matching the Arturia filter assignment colours to the knobs.
