Title: Options for extending the USB cable
Post by: ty_327 on September 07, 2021, 03:15:24 am
I just recently moved into a new apartment, and my Arturia Keylab Essential 88 is too far away from my laptop for the USB cable to reach (it's only about 6 feet long). I've read that the maximum length for a USB cable is 5 meters (which is plenty for me). I've also read that it is possible to extend a USB cable with some sort of repeater, such as a powered USB hub or an active USB cable.

Here is what I have tried so far:
- A basic, non-powered USB extension cable (3 meters, USB 2.0) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NH11PEY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- An 'active' USB extension cable (5 meters, USB 3.0) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- A basic USB type b to USB type a cable (4.5 meters, USB 2.0) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L11CRU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

None of these have worked. Upon testing each solution above, I get the same result. The keyboard lights up (so I assume it is receiving power), but windows doesn't seem to recognize it (it doesn't show up in any of my music production programs). I've scoured various online forums, and I can only find recommendations for cables of around 6 feet in length. Any ideas?

Welcome.

Unfortunately I have never had success with USB cables over 6ft, irrespective of the alleged 5 meter capability. But then again, wouldn't you find being more than 6ft away from your computer a PITA?
